One of the biggest boxing matches in years is set to take place on Saturday when lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez faces off against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. There will be a big payday and not a whole lot else on the line outside of pride. A whole lot of pride.
Saturday’s fight is being put on by Golden Boy Promotions, and is set to begin on Saturday, May 6 at 9 p.m. ET from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The card will be available via HBO pay-per-view in the United States, with a live stream available via Golden Boy.
The undercard for the bout will include three big fights. David Lemieux will take on Marcos Reyes, Lucas Matthysse will face Emmanuel Taylor, and unbeaten featherweights Joseph Diaz Jr. and Manuel Avila will also fight. There will be a preliminary card prior to the pay-per-view card that involves even more fights, which will be streamed live on YouTube.
Alvarez, 26, has 48 wins and just one career loss. He’s won 34 of his 50 fights via knockout, and also has a draw on his record. His only career loss came to Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in Sept. 2014, where he lost the WBA (Unified), WBC and The Ring light middleweight titles.
Since that fight, Alvarez has dusted four fighters through knockout, and taken two other decisions.
His opponent has 54 fights to his name, having won 50 of them with two losses, a draw and a no contest. He’s won 32 of his career fights by knockout, and last lost in April 2015 to Andrzej Fonfara. He hasn’t scored a knockout since he dusted Andy Lee in June 2012.
Alvarez should be considered the favorite, especially if Chavez has trouble making weight or has conditioning issues as he’s shown in recent fights. But Chavez at his best could spell bad things for Alvarez.
Below is all you need to know to watch the fight as well as the full fight card.
