button-red2Everyone knew that when the 2016 World Cup of Hockey got started, Team Canada would likely be the team being faced in the final, it’s just that no one suspected the David and Goliath story that would eventually transpire. As the Canadians sauntered their way through the tournament undefeated, the least-likely-to-succeed Team Europe quietly and efficiently skated their way into the final against the Maple Menace. Game 2 of the World Cup of Hockey best-of-three final will take place on Thursday night at 8:00 PM

Team Canada

The most remarkable thing about this collection of players, is that even when they barely show up, they win. When game one of the final got underway, Team Europe looked better than the Canadians. They were moving faster, and had more shots on net in the first period. Had Carey Price not been as effective as ever, and if the Europeans had gotten lucky, the tone of the game might have been set early and given the underdogs the momentum they needed to win.

Defenseman Drew Doughty said his team has to play better in Game 2. “They definitely gave us our biggest scare,” Doughty said. Even after the Canadians got onto the scoreboard, the Europeans didn’t let up, continuing to play with the determination and will that got them to the final in the first place. Team Captain Sidney Crosby admitted to the press that the game was too close for him, saying “I think we can (play) better, but ultimately we found a way to win. That’s important. We just want to make sure we give ourselves a chance by the way we play. We felt like we turned (the puck) over a little too much and lost some battles, especially in the first two periods.”

“In the end, obviously, we’ve got lots of room to get better,” Team Canada coach Mike Babcock said. Regardless of the consensus in the locker room that Team Canada wasn’t playing their best hockey on Tuesday night, the odds still lean heavily in Canada’s favor to win Game 2 and the tournament on Thursday night. They are currently listed as the -855 favorite.
Team Europe

After making it through the group stages with just a single loss (to the Canadians) and shocking everyone with a win against the second favorite Sweden with an overtime goal in the semi-final, the European team finds themselves in the second of a best-of-three final against Canada. In game one, they surprised again. Regardless of the score, they looked and played better than the tournament favorites in almost every aspect of the game, outshooting Canada 11-5 in the first 12 minutes of the game.

“We showed we can play with them,” European captain Anze Kopitar said when describing what was “arguably our best game of the tournament.” Tomas Tatar, who was the overtime hero against Sweden when he scored their overtime goal, was also the player to get Europe on the board against Canada in game 1.

Team Europe coach Ralph Krueger told the press that he was proud of his team’s relentless effort in game 1, but knows that Canada won’t be as sloppy as they were in the opener. “We can take confidence in the fact that we can win against Team Canada,” he said. “But it has to be perfect, and it certainly wasn’t today in every aspect. But lots of good things there, lots of effort, and something to build on for Game 2.” Team Europe is currently listed as the +625 underdog in Game 2.
