Saturday will kick off the best stretch of events in the horse racing calendar with the 143rd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
The day will be filled with some of the biggest races of the year, but there’s none bigger than the $2 million Kentucky Derby, a 1-1/4 mile run that could take place on a less-than-ideal track due to the weather. Either way, the day’s events will be covered by NBCSN on television beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
Coverage will switch to the flagship NBC network at 2:30 p.m., and that coverage will run through the actual Derby, which carries a post time of 6:46 p.m. Those wanting to watch online have many options via NBC Sports Live, which is available on all modern web browsers, cell phones, and other connected devices.
As far as the other races on the day go, there are some big ones. The $500,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, a Grade 1 stakes race, is the biggest of the bunch. The race is for four-year-olds and up.
Then there’s the Grade 2 stakes Churchill Distaff Turf Mile, worth $300,000. The Grade 2 stakes Churchill Downs and American Turf races will also be held on the day.
As far as the Kentucky Derby goes, it’s a crowded and talented field. Classic Empire has been consistently installed as the favorite, but McCraken and Irish War Cry are two very talented horses that have what it takes to make the field a whole lot more interesting.
Classic Empire drew the 14th post, right next to McCraken at the 15th. Classic Empire will be jockeyed by Julien Leparoux and is trained by Mark Casse. McCraken is jockeyed by Brian Hernandez Jr. and is trained by Ian Wilkes.
Below is all you need to know to watch Saturday’s action, and below that is a table featuring all the post positions, contenders, trainers, jockeys, and the morning line odds.
