PayPal is a technology platform and digital payments company that enables digital and mobile payments on behalf of consumers and merchants worldwide. PayPal’s services include PayPal Credit and certain debit card services.

For many, smartphones and the internet can be incredibly powerful resources, offering ways to connect, learn, socialize, and more. For domestic violence victims and survivors these same tools can be used to create intense harm. Control and manipulation are cornerstones of violence against women and children, and there has been an influx of technological advances that have made people even more vulnerable. Control over what someone can do or say online can cut off a lifeline that could actually be used to end the cycle of abuse, while stalkerware apps can be used to give a potential abuser direct access to someone’s location, 24/7.

To help, NortonLifeLock funded a $75,000 grant to the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), and their Safety Net Program. NNEDV is dedicated to creating a social, political, and economic environment in which domestic violence no longer exists. And through our partnership on the Safety Net Program, we’re addressing the intersection between technology and safety helping to create safer spaces for victims and potential victims and end technology abuse.

As part of this support, I was honored to keynote two webinar training sessions for the staff of organizations working to stop domestic violence. In early September, my Tools for Online Privacy and Security session reached almost 500 of these employees. We discussed survivors right to technology and its benefits. I also provided training on how to use privacy and security tools on devices, including iPhones and Android phones, like turning off geotagging and not using public Wi-Fi, to keep identities and information safe.

We also discussed how Norton™ Mobile Security for Android automatically detects stalkerware, and I provided other device safety tips, like using a password manager. Of those that participated, 99% rated the information they learned as good or excellent. Over 90% of participants were very satisfied with the usefulness of the content and 100% of respondents believed it would increase their ability to effectively do their job.

“Tech safety is extremely important to all domestic violence survivors, and as a domestic violence advocate, I will use this information on a regular basis,” said one participant. And according to another, “Cyber Security is not something I’m a subject matter expert on, so I want to know as much as I can when helping develop a safety plan with a survivor- and these things are very important!”

This week, I presented the second webinar, Device and Account Security in Safety Planning for Relocation to more than 200 people. We discussed strategies for common scenarios, like relocating with existing devices and accounts and keeping physical locations confidential, keeping the devices and accounts themselves private and inaccessible, and setting up new devices and accounts. In addition to devices and accounts, attendees also received ongoing protection tips on data, privacy, and identity. Of those that attended the event and responded to a feedback survey, 98% said the training was excellent or good and 89% are planning to implement changes based on what they learned. Attendees also appreciated the practical tips offered, saying “I loved the explanations, that jargon wasn’t used, and that all of the information was practical and digestible” and “I liked that the info is practical. Knowing something is one thing but practical things to do something about a problem is important to the helping relationship.”

New holiday COVID-19 guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges eligible people to get vaccinated against the virus and wear masks — in some cases — when gathering.

“Because many generations tend to gather to celebrate holidays, the best way to minimize COVID-19 risk and keep your family and friends safer is to get vaccinated if you’re eligible,” the CDC says in its guidance, issued on Friday.

Children in the United States who are 11 years old and younger are not yet eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Protect those not yet eligible for vaccination such as young children by getting yourself and other eligible people around them vaccinated,” the CDC says.

Getting vaccinated helps protect those have the vaccine against severe illness and death from COVID-19. Unvaccinated adults are over 6 times more likely to test positive for the virus and more than 11 times more likely to die from it compared to those who are fully vaccinated, the CDC found.

When it comes to gathering this holiday season, the agency says it is generally safer to gather outdoors than indoors.

For those who are gathering at indoor public spaces, unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated people should wear well-fitting masks over their nose and mouth, if they’re 2 or older. Fully vaccinated individuals in areas with substantial to high transmission rates should also wear masks in public indoor settings.

People who have a weakened immune system should also wear a mask when gathering. “You might choose to wear a mask regardless of the level of transmission if a member of your household has a weakened immune system, is at increased risk for severe disease, or is unvaccinated,” the CDC says.

For those who intend to travel for the holidays, the CDC recommends avoiding doing so if you are not fully vaccinated.

“If you are not fully vaccinated and must travel, follow CDC’s domestic travel or international travel recommendations for unvaccinated people,” it says.

In September, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that the U.S. could be facing another “dark winter,” although that can be avoided.

“If we don’t get people vaccinated who need to be vaccinated, and we get that conflating with an influenza season, we could have a dark, bad winter,” Fauci told CBS News’ Major Garrett. “…We could also avoid a dark, bad winter if we get people vaccinated to a very high degree over the next several weeks to a month or two.

Fauci’s fear has been expressed by other health experts as well.

Earlier this week, research presented at an American Academy of Pediatrics conference showed that last year’s decline in flu and common respiratory viruses last winter was due to people wearing masks and social distancing. If that same level of precaution isn’t followed this fall and winter, experts said, there could be a “twindemic” of COVID-19 and the flu.

“Although each of these things is not perfect, taken together, they really are effective in preventing illness,” Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said. “…It just shows you that these viruses, which are really very contagious, will take advantage of us as we open up, gather together, take off our masks.”

Update on U.S. FDA Review of Biologics License Application (BLA) for bimekizumab

Under FDA guidance relating to pre-approval inspections during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Agency may defer action on a pending application when a facility inspection is planned but cannot be completed by the PDUFA goal date due to COVID-related travel restrictions, provided that no deficiencies have been identified and the application otherwise satisfies the requirements for approval.1

Regulatory reviews are underway in Australia, Canada, Switzerland and Japan.

Five students of Surat coaching institute among 22 new Covid-19 cases

Gujarat reported 22 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the health department said Saturday. Of these 22, the most number of cases—nine — were reported from Surat, which included five students enrolled to a private coaching centre.

With this spike in cases in Surat, the health department officials have shut the coaching institute, where six students of classes 11 and 12 tested positive in a week, for 14 days.

As per the health department officials of Surat Municipal Corporation, the first case of a 16-year-old student of the institute testing positive was reported on October 9.

Officials took contact details of a total of 110 students studying in the coaching centre. The teams reached their homes and carried out RT-PCR tests of students and their family members.

On Saturday morning, five more students were tested positive. Sources in the SMC said that reports of 50 students are still awaited. The centre runs private coaching for students of classes 11 and 12 of both the Commerce and Science streams.

SMC Deputy Health Commissioner Dr Ashish Naik said, “We have given notices to the coaching centre to keep it shut for 14 days and get the centre sanitised first. Till date, six students have tested positive. While going through the history of the first case, we have found that the Class 11 student’s elder brother had gone on tour to Jaipur and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan with his three friends. He returned a couple of days ago and got his younger brother infected. Those who had gone on the tour had both taken jabs of Covid-19 vaccine.”

“All six students who tested positive were asymptomatic and their conditions were stable and under home isolation treatment. They reside in different areas in Athwa zones,” he said.

“We have told the coaching centre owner to run online classes, till the situation becomes normal. We are waiting for the report of other students,” he added.

Besides Surat, Ahmedabad and Valsad reported five and four fresh cases respectively. Junagadh saw two persons testing positive for Covid-19, while Navsari and Vadodara reported one case each.

The total number of Covid infections in the state has reached 8,34,544.
