MLB San Diego Padres fire manager Jayce Tingler after late-season collapse 2021

In the wake of a second half collapse that saw them go from NL West contenders to out of the playoffs altogether, the San Diego Padres have parted ways with manager Jayce Tingler.

T.ingler led San Diego to the playoffs last season and finished second in the NL Manager of the Year voting. This season started out strong with an exciting young team featuring Fernando Tatis Jr. holding down first place in the NL West as late as May 30.

However, the Padres faded badly in August and especially September, losing 34 of their last 46 games to finish with a 79-83 record, 11 games out of the NL’s second wild-card playoff spot.

“I have tremendous respect for him as a coach, colleague and friend,” Padres general manager A.J. Preller said in a state.ment. “After much thought and consideration over the last several weeks, we felt a change was necessary at this time to ultimately reach our championship potential in San Diego.”

In his first managerial job in the major leagues, Tingler, 40, had an overall record of 116-106 during his two years with San Diego.

“While I’m profoundly disappointed that our season ended far too soon,” said Tingler in a statement. “I know this team has a very bright future ahead.”

The Padres say he has been offered the opportunity to remain with the organization.
